Since May 2026 you can ride a train from New Cairo to the New Administrative Capital. The East Nile monorail now runs 22 stations from Nasr City, through New Cairo, to Justice City in the Capital, every day from 6 am to 9 pm. For a buyer, that makes a home near a station easier to live in without a car. It does not make every compound that says "near the monorail" close to one. Check the walk, the hours and the fare before you pay for the location.
The facts below were checked on 21 October 2026. For the wider market this year, see Egypt's property market in 2026.
What opened, and when
President Sisi inaugurated the line on 20 March 2026 (Railway Supply). Passengers first rode it on 6 May, on a first stretch of 16 stations from El-Moshir Tantawi to Justice City in the New Administrative Capital (Egyptian Streets, Bloomberg).
The Ministry of Transport opened six more stations on 27 June, from Cairo Stadium in Nasr City to El-Moshir Tantawi. The full line now has 22 stations and runs daily from 6 am to 9 pm, according to the minister (Al-Ain). When the first stretch opened, it ran only until 6 pm.
The line is 56.5 kilometers long. Railway Supply puts a full trip at about 70 minutes. In August, The National found trains coming every six to eight minutes, and fairly quiet: 30 to 50 people across four cars on a Thursday afternoon (The National).
The stations
The first 16 stations, from west to east: El-Moshir Tantawi, One Ninety, Air Force Hospital, Al-Narges, Al-Mustathmereen, Lotus, Golden Square, Beit Al-Watan, Al Fattah Al Alim Mosque, R1, R2, Finance and Business, City of Arts and Culture, Government District, Misr Mosque and Justice City (Egyptian Streets).
The six added in June: Cairo Stadium, Hisham Barakat, Al-Azhar University, Al-Hay Al-Sabea, El-Moshir Ahmed Ismail and Gihan El-Sadat (Al-Ain).
Three connections matter for getting around:
- Cairo Stadium connects to Metro Line 3.
- City of Arts and Culture connects to the LRT electric train.
- A link to Metro Line 6 is planned at Al-Narges, and to Metro Line 4 at Hisham Barakat. Neither is running yet.
What a trip costs
Fares started on 9 May, after three free days. A trip of up to five stations costs EGP 20, up to 10 stations EGP 40, up to 15 stations EGP 55, and the whole line EGP 80. People over 60 and people with disabilities pay half. A monthly pass of 60 trips over 60 days costs EGP 600 to 2,400, depending on the distance (Egyptian Streets).
For a daily commute across the whole line, that is EGP 160 a day on single tickets, or EGP 40 a trip on the full-line monthly pass. A ticket covers one direction only.
The 6th of October line is not open yet
The West Nile monorail will run 43.8 kilometers, with 13 stations, from New October City to Wadi El Nile in Mohandessin. The Ministry of Transport plans trial running on eight stations, from New October to the Alexandria Desert Road, from October 2026, and trials on the rest in the first quarter of 2027 (Ahram Online, 28 August). Trial running is testing. We found no date for passengers to ride it.
So if you are buying in 6th of October or Sheikh Zayed, treat the monorail as a plan whose date has moved before. In 2020 the 6th of October line was due to open in 2023 (Egypt Independent).
What WiserChat shows in these areas
WiserChat's figures on 21 October 2026, for homes for sale:
- New Administrative Capital: 6,694 homes in 124 projects. The typical apartment is EGP 8.7 million for 170 square meters, about EGP 51,000 a meter. 403 homes are ready now and 1,209 more deliver within a year.
- New Cairo, all districts together (New Cairo, Fifth Settlement and the others): 7,183 homes in 173 projects. The typical apartment is EGP 10.4 million for 132 square meters, about EGP 83,000 a meter. 112 homes are ready now and 454 more deliver within a year.
The Capital is cheaper per meter and has more homes you can move into soon. New Cairo is closer to the rest of Cairo. The monorail now links the two, so a buyer weighing one against the other can look at both.
What this means if you're buying
- Measure the walk. The trains run above the main roads. A compound "next to the monorail" may still be a long walk from the nearest station gate. Open a map and check the distance from the building you are buying, not from the compound's sign.
- Check the hours against your day. Trains stop at 9 pm. If you come home later, you still need a car or a ride.
- Price the commute. EGP 80 each way for the full line is far more than the metro. Put it in your monthly budget next to fuel and parking.
- Don't pay extra for a line that isn't running. In 6th of October, the monorail is still in testing. If a seller prices in the monorail, ask what you get if it opens later than planned.
- Compare like with like. Price per meter, delivery date and the payment plan matter more than one train line. Why property prices in Egypt are hard to compare shows how.
